Primed vs Unprimed
Zenithal Prime
Vallejo Primers
Suitable for both airbrush and brush.
Its all in the priming!
Proper priming is essential for achieving durable paint adhesion, consistent color coverage, and a smooth final finish. Vallejo Surface Primer is an acrylic-polyurethane primer designed for use on plastic, resin, metal, and 3D printed models.
Surface Preparation
Before priming, ensure all parts are clean and free from contaminants.
-Remove any support marks, flash, or surface imperfections.
-Sand rough areas as required.
-Wash parts with warm water and a mild detergent to remove dust, oils, and release agents.
-Allow all components to dry completely before priming.
Primer Application
Vallejo Surface Primer can be applied by airbrush or brush.
Airbrush Application (Recommended)
-Shake the primer thoroughly before use.
-Apply directly from the bottle or thin slightly if required for your airbrush setup.
-Spray multiple light coats rather than one heavy coat.
-Maintain a consistent distance of approximately 10–15 cm (4–6 inches) from the model.
-Allow each coat to dry before applying additional coats.
Brush Application
-Apply the primer in thin, even coats.
-Avoid overworking the surface once applied.
-Multiple thin coats may be required for complete coverage.
Drying and Curing
-Surface dry: approximately 15–30 minutes.
-Handle with care after 1–2 hours.
-Full cure: approximately 24 hours under normal conditions.
Drying and curing times may vary depending on temperature, humidity, and coat thickness.
Primer Selection
Different primer colors can influence the appearance of subsequent paint layers:
-Black Primer – Ideal for dark color schemes, metallic finishes, and strong shadow effects.
-Grey Primer – General-purpose primer suitable for most projects.
-White Primer – Recommended for bright colors, vibrant finishes, and high-contrast paint schemes.
Best Practices
-Apply several thin coats rather than a single heavy coat.
-Avoid excessive primer buildup, which can obscure fine surface details.
-Prime in a clean, dust-free environment.
-Ensure adequate ventilation during application.
-Allow the primer to fully cure before applying paint, masking tape, or weathering products.
Troubleshooting
Rough or Grainy Finish
-Primer may be drying before reaching the surface.
-Reduce spraying distance or adjust air pressure.
-Apply lighter coats.
Pooling or Loss of Detail
-Excessive primer has been applied.
-Remove excess material and allow the surface to dry before reapplying.
Poor Adhesion
-Surface contamination may be present.
-Clean the model thoroughly and reprime.
Zenithal
Applying a black primer as a base and then spraying a white primer over it from top to down will add a lighter highlight to the top of the model and cast a natural looking shadow underneith!
